It's cars that create the buzz for Charlotte the city nicknamed “The Hornet's Nest“. When angry residents chased out the British General Cornwallis he wrote about the city as a hornet's nest of rebellion.
Today, what really keeps Charlotte moving as a popular tourist destination are race cars. The city is a major hub of the motorsports industry attracting many teams and organizations to move to Charlotte. The National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) holds many offices there, as well as the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Almost three-quarters of the people employed in NASCAR industries live in or near Charlotte. The Charlotte Motor Speedway, an 810 hectare motorsports complex has a 2.4 kilometer quad oval track that is considered the home track for NASCAR. It hosts prestigious NASCAR races like the Coca Cola 600 and the Sprint All-Star Race.
The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) has constructed a dragstrip in the city that is luring top professional drag racers to move to Charlotte. The Charlotte Motor Speedway has also constructed a state-of-the-art 0.40 kilometer drag strip called the ZMAX Dragway. The only one of its kind in the USA, it is an all-concrete, 4-lane strip and hosts NHRA races. Alongside, a state-of-the-art clay oval track hosts dirt racing including the finals of the World of Outlaws Late Model series.
Charlotte is referred to as the New Energy Capital because of its prominent role in the energy sector. Almost 250 companies in this industry have a major base in Charlotte. Companies like AREVA, Siemens Energy, Toshiba and Westinghouse can be found in Charlotte. The University of North Carolina Charlotte is recognized in energy education and research.
Whether it's race cars, energy companies, education or just attractions and entertainment, Charlotte just keeps on buzzing.
